The Quest for the Grail

Well, it would seem censorship is at hand, although we did stretch out of the 'realm of rules' a bit in search of the grail at the whirlpool. What pilgrim did we offend, I wonder? Are we barred forever from participating in our search for the grail at other places?? Let's hope not! Regardless, the whirlpool respite was some fun!; and, wonderful memories and chuckles shared by we who saw the humour of it!!! Friends are welcome here. Let freedom of speech abound!!!

Melanie, in that case it's not as unusual as I first thought. I thought you were looking for the ultimate off road vehicle.

Interestingly, I believe the Massey Ferguson Tractor has it's origins in Scotland ie. Ferguson!

Could be wrong, but I think thats a fact - my brain is full of crap.........obviously:-D

Anonymous said...

right about tracking you down, esp with that RAF connection... ;)

he was looking at those too, ATV-quad things...for hunting, trail-riding (as a family) I don't want to carry a 50 pound pack 10 - 15 miles anymore!!

AJ Fife said...

Hunting, Melanie? Tsk Tsk we've banned that sort of thing - actually, another triumph for Tony Blair(did I say that!).

What do you hunt - buffaloes, grizzleys or wolves? I wouldn't mind if you shoot rattle snakes or coyotes or mountain lions - cos those things bite. The former wild beasts are just cuddley.

Waddaya think?

Anonymous said...

do they allow for any motorized vehicles on the different trails in Scotland?...they've set up some here, separate from hikers...I've always been one for walking, but it does sound like fun

....my hubby, or should I say men in general?! (said in fun!)...they'll have any excuse for a new "toy" ;)

Anonymous said...

he hunts elk, deer, wild boar, bear...up in Colorado on an annual trip
I just target shoot, although I've considered a bit of hunting; but it's sort of a man's world there,... on second thought...maybe I should just stay to the kitchen!! ;)

the liberals have seen to the protection of dangerous things...can't shoot wolves, mountain lions and grizzleys!

AJ Fife said...

There are special areas set aside, but the UK is so small, you can't just off road anywhere. There is no wilderness, it's all owned. So special permission has to be sought for really good off roading.

Mountain biking is hugely popular however. Personally I would ban it. Climbing up a great big hill and some fancy pants speeds past you on a bike is pretty frustrating!

What's the biggest thing you've shot?

Anonymous said...

I've only shot at big and little targets! :) Hubby brought home an elk last trip

Anonymous said...

Mountain bikes are fun, in designated areas, but your right about them going by you fast...as your trudging on! :) I still would rather 'trudge' and enjoy the scenery for a day hike!

you're up late!!

AJ Fife said...

An ELK!!??!!

They're pretty cuddley...no?

You must have been eating Elk pie for months!

How big is your freezer? Did it have antlers, and if yes, did you stick them above the fireplace?

AJ Fife said...

Melanie, you're right, it's late. I'll head off and have nightmares about your hubby going Shrek hunting;-)

Anonymous said...

it was a small female, so no antlers! We have a large freezer out in the garage, but we shared the meat with some friends and family...we have rancher friends, so it's cheaper to go in on a full cow, then have the meat all year...I do have two deer heads with antlers on the wall, though

Anonymous said...

ok, g'nite, don't worry, your safe, he won't be hunting Shrek!! ;)

Anonymous said...

Hi good morning....AJ, did the deer trophies scare you away?!! :)

Hi Anna, I thought the Ancient Scot did an excellent job yesterday...I like how you have the dialect! :)

Was hoping to catch you for a quick chat...but I'm off to work here soon for the day and it seems the crickets are abounding!

Will have to catch up with you two tomorrow! Bye!

Anonymous said...

Ps Anna, I suppose I'm a bit like Scarlett with the feisty, flighty...and hubby can vouch for stubborn...but life, marriage, nursing have taught me to have the backbone of (almost!)sheer steel :)

Although I called AJ 'darling', I'm still a southern lady! (hubby knows the special words I have set aside for him!) and I think AJ correctly understood my meaning :)

Are you taking your law-classes towards becoming a para-legal? (sorry, don't know the equiv in UK)

Not ignoring you AJ, just had to catch up with the Sq. Leader! ;)

Hope your both having a great day!

AJ Fife said...

Glad you cleared that up Melanie. I think Anna felt a wee bit like a gooseberry!!;-))

Not much doing today, apart from the Vettriano story!!

Anonymous said...

Melanie - yeah I had you down as a Scarlett but with a bit more of the lady thrown in ;))
Yes - I am doing a para - legal course - it's interesting but I have to think a lot - so I need to get my brain in gear - doing some refresher stuff for going back to work when 'my boy' gets a bit older. I have a little office type job at the moment - a few hours a week - so I thought I'd improve my skills a bit while I've got the time. Wed is college day - the parking there is a nightmare - I got blocked in and I was trying to squeeze my car out - it's quite a long estate (I think you call them station wagons?) so I got stuck. Anyway, eventually the very young student came back and moved her car - I think I may have nudged it a bit, but she didn't notice - too anxious to get away - I think!! They all have cars nowadays - the times are certainly a'changing! (Bob Dylan?).

You 2 were certainly gassing away last night ....... any more terms of endearment?

Anonymous said...

I was going to add to my story have you ever seen Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe - if you have - then my experience today reminds me of when Cathy Bates gets her parking space nicked and rams the other car: "I'm older than you and I've got more insurance"

I didn't ram the other car but it did cross my mind :))

AJ Fife said...

Good afternoon Anna, I hope you're well. You should invest in an APC. That would solve the parking difficulties!!;-))

Despite your reservations, we got thanked by people on the manners blog!!

Melanie, are you going shooting soon? I would imagine Prairie Dogs would make good targets!

Anonymous said...

Yes, I've just looked at the manners blog - looks like we amused a couple of people. I've had a chat with Janis before - in fact she recommended a book to me - which I got out of the library. "The Thistle and the Rose - 700 years of love and hate between the Scots and the English" by Alan Massie - who writes for the Scotsman occasionally. Its quite a good read - a few of the people on those blogs should read it - they might at least get their history correct!

I won't bother with an APV - AJ - I'll just get a Massey Ferguson tractor off Melanie's hubby - that should sort the parking problems! "Where do you park that thing?" "Anywhere I bl**dy like"!!

I see the main politics blog is falling into predictable lines again!! :-))

Personally, I think England will vote Conservative next time - what do you think Scotland will do..?

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I hate to say it, but I think Scotland will always vote Labour in General Elections - unless there is a major reversal of devolution.

Hopefully, next years Scottish elections will see the SNP run Labour very close, but as for General Elections - Scotland will vote Labour :-((

I've heard of the book you mention, but I believe Massie is a unionist!?!

Anonymous said...

I didn't know Massie was a Unionist - we don't really have that here - I know you do in Scotland - or I should do by now after reading the Scotsman blogs. Anyway, his book is fairly factual on the history side - in comparison to other stuff I've read - I don't know about the present day stuff - because I haven't got that far yet. He does criticise the English but then, he criticises the Scots as well.

That blog about the ASBO mother has really degenerated into a nasty forum - most of the comments have been removed - I dread to think what they were ... :/

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I might of course be wrong about Massie's book, it maybe pretty straight down the middle.

The ASBO story was just a wee bit too much for me. All I felt was pity for the girl. She may well have symptoms of mental illness, brought on by the death of her kid.

Can't get enthused by anything tonight, but I watched David Tennant on Who do you think you are? It was facinating stuff, especially when realised his Grandfather was an Orangeman!!

Anonymous said...

...."I'm older than you and I've got more insurance"...Love it, Anna!!! :)

Have more squirrels that tear things up on the farms here...My hubby and bro-in-law used to be paid by the head, so to speak!

Please don't think us too barbaric!!! :)

Have another shift Thurs :( so won't get to chat...Fri looks reasonably clear, though. Any social events planned for this weekend, AJ??!! Will Anna and I have to have our chat without you again?! ;)

Will give a quick hello, my a.m. and to see what you've been up to!
bye for now!

Anonymous said...

Hi both,

I was a bit late getting to it - but I've just read yesterday's blog about Norwich and the hogmannay ceildah ban. What a load of blah - none of this stuff ever gets reported down here and our local news comes from Norwich - I think the Scotsman likes to twist things to keep the auld rivalry going! I've replied to some silly moo called Maggie who had decided that she is never going to visit Norwich now because of that silly story.

If you get down to East Anglia - AJ - go to Norwich it is really a nice city...... nice shops, pubs, restaurants etc. Don't take any notice of the Scotsman blog! Cambridge is also a nice place to visit - very historical with the old colleges and a nice city.

Anonymous said...

good morning, :)

Anna, was wondering about that, they sounded like a bunch of 'grumps' ruining some traditional fun...

am running late...will hopefully catch up with you both, tomorrow!

Anonymous said...

Hi Melanie - hope to spk next time :-)

Not seen you on any blogs today - AJ - mind you I've only just managed to have a quick look. They don't look very interesting -more stuff about ASBOs - that is such a media 'buzz phrase' now. So, you're just a big softie at heart then, not commenting on the girl who lost her baby and got an ASBO blog yesterday. I didn't comment on it either for much the same reasons as you ... :)) As I said earlier tho' there were some really nasty people on there - it makes you realise that there are some scary people out there in cyber space!

Anonymous said...

Re: David Tennant - I never saw that programme but my son absolutely loves him - "he is so wicked"........ because he's Dr Who!! He's written out his birthday and Xmas list and Dr Who stuff is featuring heavily in it. Mind you - there are a couple of the episodes that he won't watch the repeats of on his own - he wants his Dad to watch them with him because they're a bit scary!! :))

AJ Fife said...

Anna/Melanie

Problems at work today, so I've had very little chance to post.

My weekend should be relatively clear, so I may partake in a blether.

The Scotsman is pretty boring, but I did make a comment on the ASBO story today - they want to use Fife for a trial!!!:-|

How about your weekend Melanie, are you shopping for a new high powered rifle, that can drop a buffalo from 2000 yds? ;-)

Dr Who is a pretty cool guy these days. I remember Patrick Troughton fairly well and he scared the living bejesus out of me! Forget the Cybermen and Daleks, it was thr Dr who was scary!! Do you notice the studio sets don't wobble like they used to!

Anonymous said...

We went to a 'Dr Who' museum when we were visited Holt, Norfolk in the holidays. It was brilliant - typical 'yokel Norfolk' thing and I mean that in a nice way :)) It was basically stuff that this 'anorak' type guy had been collecting for years and he had it all displayed in the back room of a little cafe. Both my boys (!) loved it - they were in their element - I just went through to the cafe and had a coffee while the big boy did the 'all our yesterdays behind the settee watching Doctor Who in the 70s bit'......... and the little boy was looking at all the groovy new stuff and asking if he could get his photo taken next to the Dalek while he was dressed up as a Cyber man!! :))
It was exactly the same when we visited the space centre in Leicester...... what is it about males and the stars/planets?

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I think it's about trying to work out what planet our woman folk are on!! ;-D

Woman folk? do you think I'm picking up the Melanie Southern Lingo?

I was a Star Trek fan, but I didn't go for all the new versions - strictly Scottie, Bones, Mr Spock and James T Kirk, oh and Lt Yuhoora used to give me bad headaches as an adolescent!!

Anonymous said...

What about Star Wars? Thats another one that I've never watched, although we have all the DVDs!!
I do like Lord of the Rings tho' but that's fantasy rather than sci-fi. We're all Harry Potter fans as well - books and films!!

Anonymous said...

Hi AJ/Anna,

Well, you've got me on Dr. Who...only watched a little :)
but the others are fun!

AJ,...." high powered rifle, that can drop a buffalo from 2000 yds? ;-)"...already have one! :) It's 115year old 50 caliber rifle that was altered to fit a scabbard on a saddle! (believe it or not, we found it cheap in an antique store amongst the air/pellet guns, they didn't know what they had!)...the thing's a cannon...I won't shoot it for fear of the bruising, not to mention dislocation of my shoulder!

oh, as a warning, AJ, your post on the manners blog was removed...but Corbett, Horrible and the rest are still there?? go figure!?...just be careful!

Will have to go read about that Fife trial thing, was that the one on the nurturing of infants? ...But, will have to wait until tomorrow, was just called over to the sofa for some Tele...

Ciao!

Hi

The St Andrew's holiday blog is interesting.... I've suggested 23 April for the Scottish holiday because it's warmer than November. Nobody has taken me up on it yet ... but I think it would be nice if the Scots took their holiday on St George's day ;-))

AJ Fife said...

Hello Everyone,

I've had to work again today - it's really not on. So once again my contribution has been limited. However, I should step up to the plate tonight.

Melanie, I don't appear to be banned...yet. If I remember my manners comment, I think I was being a wee bit personal towards Corbie!!

So, in effect, I was censored for being abusive towards myself!!!!
No smarty pants comments Anna :-D

Anna, I was never into the Star Wars stuff, although I did go to see the original when it came out. By that stage, it was all the horror stuff - zombies, vampyres, werewolfs, Maggie Thatcher etc.....

Anonymous said...

I see you and Janis are being accused of being each other and trolls on the St Andrews board, but then, David from Texas is on there so what do you expect?

Do you read Stephen King books, AJ? I always thought Salem's Lot was really scary - the one about the vampires!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I used to love Stephen King and Salem's lot was one of my favourites. I also loved his short stories - Bachman Diaries - great story teller, but I grew out of SK in about 1986!

What're your favourite books guys?

Anonymous said...

Hi guys, internet problems today, hopefully worked out...

Salem's Lot...I think I slept with the lights on for a while afterward! ;)

Favorite books, I like Tolkien: The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings but I also like most of the Agatha Christie, and other 'who done its'

I also read historical/biography type books, as long as they're not 'too dry!'

:)

AJ Fife said...

Melanie,

How are you? Interesting about your choice of books and, of course I like biographies and historical reference books(told you I was boring).

My favourite books though, include The Exorcist - I first read it when I was 16 and definitely couldn't sleep for a week!!

Have you looked at the St Andrews day blog - great potential for wind ups!! :-D

Anonymous said...

I was going to say something about my being boring! :)

..your "Interesting"...now that's a 'loaded' word! ;) ...I suppose my book choices are a mix of readin pleasure!

didn't get into the Exorcist, way too scary...I prefer more psychological thrillers....or like 6th Sense ...not quite so 'evil'! ;)

will have a look at St Andrews!

Anonymous said...

Oh my word, David from Texas is such a w**nker, sorry but I can't help swearing. He's quite happy to call anyone a racist who contradicts him and accuses them of being English and anti-Scots - he is a tosser. Right rant over!!

Salem's Lot was on TV in the 80s - David Soul played the vampire slayer - it was well scary!! Another film I found scary was the original version of The Innocents based on Henry James The Turn of the Screw. Its about 2 Victorian kids who are haunted by the ghosts of their dead governess and her boyfriend - really creepy that one.

I wonder if David will report us all to the Scotsman ...

Anonymous said...

wow, I see what you mean about David, he's very opinionated...wanted to join in but had to help the teen with some algebra...she has an assignment due in and you know, teenage girls...drama!

I have to meet with a friend this afternoon, might not be back before your beddy-by...hopefully no internet problems this weekend so I can have time to 'blether', as AJ says! :)

Anonymous said...

Btw - Melanie you have similar reading tastes to me - LOTR and Agatha Christie. I collect first editions and I have got a few Agatha Christies - none of the really sought after ones from the 1930s but a few of her later books. First editions of Ten Little N**gers (now called And Then There Were None) in its original dust jacket and Murder on the Orient Express are worth a bomb - but sadly, I can't afford them!

Anonymous said...

Favourite books - I read all sorts of stuff - fiction and non fiction. I like some crime fiction but not all of it. I like Ruth Rendell and Agatha Christie but I've read all of theirs now.

I really like Louis de Bernieres who wrote Captain Corelli's Mandolin - his other books are good too. Also, Sebastian Faulks, Birdsong, Charlotte Grey, etc. My all time favourite book which I absolute love and have read many times is 'Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck it is a fab book - his prose is a delight to read. I like all of Steinbeck's work but G of W is my top book. I've read Gone with the Wind a few times as well!!
I read a fair bit of non fiction history books as well - the Stuart dynasty, the French royal dynasty of Bourbon, American Civil War....!

I'm also very keen on anything to do with Jack the Ripper and have a bookshelf full of books by various Ripperologists - they still haven't solved it!!

Bet you wish you'd never asked:D

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I've got a friend who collects first editions - he's got a valuable Thomas Hardie, can't remember what one, but it's a potentially lucrative hobby and legacy!

I've got embroilled with David, because I congratulated Anna!
Somehow I feel at one with Anna.........and Janis and Peter and Uncle Tom Cobbly etc :-DD

Anonymous said...

I've noticed - AJ - you are really winding him up - whatever you do - don't call me Anna on the blog - he'll explode!!
A first edition Thomas Hardy would be worth a pretty penny... I've picked up some of my 1st eds in charity shops - but they're catching on nowadays. Still I live in hope of stumbling across a rare gem!

Anonymous said...

What is a weegie?

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

A Weegie is a Glaswegian and they don't like it!! Oh happy days...

Irvine Welsh made the term famous with his Trainspotting novel. As I'm sure you know the novel was set in Edinburgh, and the inter-city rivalry was covered extensivly, The term Weegie was used in a VERY derogatory manner. So in a nutshell, Weegies don't like getting called Weegies!!:-D

Anonymous said...

Ah right - I thought it had something to do with religion - didn't realise it was Glasgow. I've seen Trainspotting but it was a long time ago. They are really upsetting David now - I wish they'd leave me out of it ...... but whatever, he asks for some of it..... he needs to get a sense of humour :D

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

It's nothing to do with religion, just geographical and society driven! There is a lot of rivalry between the two cities - very different places, both socially and economically!

Have you read Irvine Welsh?

Anonymous said...

No I haven't read him - did he write Porno?

I see Martha is getting a hammering now - she really asks for it tho' - patronising or what?

AJ Fife said...

He did write Porno - it's the sequel to Trainspotting, although in many of his books, he make references to characters in Trainspotting.

Once you get into his style, the books are extremely realistic, disturbing, gritty and funny - sure sign of talent. However his book called Filth, was a step too far - even for someone as broad-minded as me!!

It was badly written, but I really tried to goad Martha with the muffin reference - it didn't seem to work :-(

Anonymous said...

I'll look up Trainspotting and order it from the library...and give him a go (said the actress to the bishop!!)

Martha is back and as full of p**s and vinegar as ever!

I liked the muffin comment! My son loves American style muffins - I'm not that keen myself but then I don't really like cakes :))

Anonymous said...

David the Weegie is definitely going to think we are one and the same now!

Ah well, c'est la vie....... At least we know, for a fact that not all Americans are like Martha - Melanie is the complete opposite of her. I'm definitely on the side of the confederates now .... especially as Martha has admitted to coming from above the Mason Dixon line. I bet her knickers have the stars & stripes on them!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Have you ever noticed the giant cookies you can buy, they look crunchy, but they're always soft - very disappointing!

AJ recipe No1

Chocolate Chip Muffin
Stick in oven - 190 for 15 mins
Dollop of ice cream on top of Muffin once served

Bob's yer Uncle - muffin dreamworld:-))

I reckon you'll enjoy Trainspotting!

Melanie, in case you're perturbed by my anti-American sentiment in the St Andrew blog - it's really all for effect. :-) I only really have a problem with George W Bush!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the recipe idea - I'll give it a try on Monday - the 'best mate' is coming for tea!!

Anonymous said...

Do you mean those cookies they serve in shopping malls? I know what you mean and they always smell gorgeous as well - such a disappointment. Actually, my favourite biscuits are ginger ones (I was going to say nuts - but it could have been misconstrued!!)

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

So, do you reckon the Vicar's wife likes her nuts?

Anonymous said...

AJ - Ask the vicar!! :D Dry roasted anyone?

Someone else is having a pop at David now, he'll probably think its you or Janis or me!! Still its entertaining, I think Martha has cleared off....

Anonymous said...

What is the Steppenwolf?

Anonymous said...

Is Stevie an old pal of yours or something...... you seem very chummy :))

AJ Fife said...

Anna, I was referring to ginger nuts, of course!!

The guy Stevie sussed out who I was during the course of a discussion weeks ago - it was about a hovercraft service from fife to edinburgh. I made a statement, that made it obvious to anyone who knows me to recognise my work!!!

The Steppenwolf, is the bizarre name of my old local!

You could track me down now Anna, with ease! Not that you're that bored.

Anonymous said...

Aha, I'm intrigued now - I'll put my Miss Marple hat on!

Steppenwolf used to be a pop band - "Born to be Wild" way back when!

Right, must be off - night night!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Steppenwolf was indeed the band who were respnsible for "Born to be Wild", but they inturn were named after a book by some german geezer, whose name escapes me. I can't summon the energy to google - Am aff tae ma bed inaw!

Anonymous said...

Hi guys, sorry to miss all the fun, but had an unexpected, nice meet/chat with a girlfriend I haven't seen in a while

Anna, I find it incredible the amount and variety you read, it's great! .... I agree with the intrigued, I'm glad you have your Miss Marple hat! :)

AJ, for a straitforward guy, you're still a mystery ..."obvious to anyone who knows me to recognise my work", etc!!! ! :) ....with an excellent taste in muffin/ice cream desserts!!! ;) Can't wait for AJ Recipe no. 2 :)

was wondering about the Anti-American, but figured if you were completely anti then why would you be talking with me!!! :) ...I assumed it was to stir the pot and/or political which I can understand, I'm not too completely happy about it all, either!

Yes, don't worry, I don't have any nuclear rockets or anti-person. mines underneath my bed! Although, not as bad as Martha can get, I'm still patriotic but to the essence of what the country is supposed to be/stand for...

Will try to catch up with you both tomorrow sometime! Have a good sleep! :)

AJ Fife said...

Melanie,

I'm a great believer that people are the same, the world over. The only thing that taints, are the political systems imposed and decisions taken on our behalf!

I've known many Americans and 99% have been beautiful friendly people. The same goes for English, Australian, Scottish etc.....haven't met anybody from Greenland - I believe they're a bit cold!

You Melanie, are definitely the top of the pops.

I apologise for any offence caused, but I was on a David TX wind up mission!! :-))

Anonymous said...

Melanie

I know there are lots of nice Americans - there is you for a start :)) We have been to the US and met lots of friendly people there and also from meeting members of the USAF over here. The 'English' get slagged off as well for being colonial, stuck up, patronising etc etc. But, I know that all the English are not like that - although there are a few. Just as there are some Americans, like Martha, who come over as arrogant and seem to talk down to us poor 'Europeans'. The English can also appear reserved and standoffish but a lot of us are good, loyal friends once you get to know us!!:))

As for the Scots stereotyped as dour, mean, parochial - well that may be true of a few but, again there are loads of Scots people who are friendly, nice and funny - I can't think of any off the top of my head but ... I'm sure there must be some!!
Joke AJ .....:D ...... before you give me a verbal kicking ;))

AJ Fife said...

Just as well you said that in jest Anna. I was about to organise an invasion of your northern lands - beginning with sacking of Newcastle!! The only trouble with that, would be my trusty sodjers having their heads turned by the strumpets and drinking dens in the Bigg Market!!

Now that's typical Scottish behaviour! ;-D

Anonymous said...

Phew - that was a lucky escape for 'Canny Newcassel' then! :))

Last time I was up that way it was to go to the cinema at the Metro Centre with my cousin. We went to see the 2nd LOTR film - I'd already seen it but she hadn't so I didn't mind going again to keep her company! I've got a few relations on the Northumbrian side of the border as well - but they live in much more rural places that Newcastle!!

Who is Michelle McManus? I should probably know but I can't think who it is!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Michelle was the big lass who won the singing competition on telly. I was, being cheeky!!:-)

I've been out in Newcastle a few times - the lassies don't believe in wearing very much, even in January!!

Anonymous said...

Oh, that's right I remember her now - I though it would be you having a joke. I was thinking of Mick McManus - used to be a wrestler at one time - wonder if they're related.

I've heard that about the lasses in Newcastle - they wouldn't be seen dead in a coat - its the same in Manchester, apparently. It must get a bit parky in the depth of winter!:))

Any plans for the day AJ? We've just been out for a walk with the dog - its a nice day here. I was hoping to spot some puffball mushrooms in the fields at the back of us - but there weren't any. Its probably not cold and damp enough yet. Have you ever tried them - they look like giant golf balls but if you slice them and fry them for your Sunday brekkie they're quite tasty!!

Well, Saturday night is curry night - we've got quite a good little Indian restaurant here so - I'll be having a Lamb Madras! Do you like Indian food?

Anonymous said...

good morning!

I agree about people being the same pretty much, and then everyone has their individual tendencies, albeit with some cultural/political influences...we find that the more people travel/are exposed to diff cultures, the more tolerant they are of any differences... :))

Are you posting anywhere today? Not that I want to cause trouble for anyone... ;) but Mr. Holmes is on the 'mature workforce' blog. ;)

Will try to catch you today as I'm in and out for fam. things

Anna, you're brave about the mushrooms!! Enjoy the curry tonight; we love it!

Anonymous said...

Hello Melanie

Have a look at the Mary Queen of Scots blog.

Puffball mushrooms are fine to eat and are so distinctive that you couldn't confuse them with anything else. I would be wary of picking anything else in case it was a toadstool or a poisonous mushroom. My uncle, often goes our for field mushrooms near where he lives in Scotland. When I've been there for breakfast and had some .... well I'm still here to tell the tale - so he must know what hes doing!:))

Peajay said...

AJ, the Texas Weegie is a anally retentive dipstick!

Anonymous said...

Excellent observation, Peejay!!:D

Peajay said...

Thank you Anna. I was quietly seething at the Weegies comments and wanted to add words of encouragement without being lambasted by said dipstick.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, he would probably have attacked you as an anti Scottish, English racist - that is how predictable he is. He would also have thought we were all the same person.... he doesn't seem to get the fact that there are quite a lot of people out there who think he's an eejit!!:))

To be honest I've got him down as a homesick Unionist Scot - and there is noone more patriotic than someone who is homesick!

Peajay said...

And none more dangerous than a Patriotic zealot.
Off to bed now as have craft fair in your direction tomorrow (Waterbeach)and need to be up early.

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I once watched an Italian chef on the telly select, pick and cook a puff ball mushroom - it looked great. But like Melanie says, you've got to be brave, I think they have to be picked as soon as they appear.

Funny old thing, I walked the dogs today on the beach(I do it everyday)and we had curry tonight from our favourite takeway - chicken vindaloo for me, Bombay potato for the wife. I love curry, I mean really love curry - at least two times a week and mainly I make my own.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah curry mmmmmmmmm:-D

Anonymous said...

okay, then....AJ recipe no. 2 definitely needs to be the curry recipe!!!! We have only one Indian restaurant here and they're a bit expensive....we really like curry, too!!! :) ...I'd love to make it at home, but haven't found a good recipe for the curry or the yogurt sauce... :o "help!" :)

Hi Peajay, will e-mail you at home to see how the craft faire went!!

Anna, missed the Queen Mary blog...as in all the fun things to say.... :) Sats. are busy when the Sgt Maj is home!! ...neverending 'chores'!!!

bye for now!

Yes the smaller puffballs (still big for a mushroom) are the best. Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall once stuffed and cooked one on the River Cottage series - mind you that guy would eat anything!

I've never tried a vindaloo - bit too hot for me - I can cope with a Madras, we both like that and the 'son' likes Chicken Korma and a nan. They say that curry is addictive - its probably true - you do seem to sort of crave it a bit!!

I make my own as well but I cheat and buy a curry paste add some tinned tomatoes, onions and coconut milk, chicken or lamb, sometimes potato, if its a kashmir I add sliced banana near the end. Mine are usually a bit of a chuck it in event more than a recipe - if I'm just making it for me and other half I add a few more chillis.

Anonymous said...

hi guys!

have a shift today, will catch up with ya Monday! :)

AJ Fife said...

Melanie,

Cuury is a simple dish to make, and like Anna, I tend to cheat on the preparation.

AJ recipe No2:-

1 finely chopped onion
6 cloves of garlic either crushed or chopped
1 small piece of fresh ginger 1 inch roughly - grate
two large chiclen breasts - cubed
spinach - a handfull( sorry not a clue about weight)
cashew nuts - half a handfull
mushrooms - any amount
2 chilli peppers finely chopped
Fresh coriander leaf - half a handfull
500 gram of chopped tomatoes-fresh or tinned
Optional - try coconut milk instead of tomatoes to give a flavour of the exotic orient
1 tbsp of ordinary curry powder
tsp of demerara sugar

The ingredients are rough guide to a basic, but delicious cutty

Step 1-fry with sesame oil the onion, garlic and ginger for 30 sec, add chopped chicken and brown.

Step 2-add curry powder, sugar, coriander, tomatoes, mushrooms, chilli, spinache - mushrooms will cook down and release extra liquid

Step 3-simmer for at least 30 min and add cashew nuts with 10 min to go
add a little water if required

That is avery basiic but very easy curry - you can't go wrong, as all curries are good. The measurement/weight can vary depending what flavours you want to promote, and the heat can be controlled by the amount of chilli peppers.

I'm sure you know all that Melanie. I look forward to hearing of your results :-))

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

The puffballs have now got me intrigued - I've got to try them.

As you probably read, I gave Melanie a basic recipe, but with experimentation it has the potential to be show stopper with all her pals - whadaya think?

Anonymous said...

I sometimes put mushrooms and spinach in mine as well - or chard which is very similar. I get an organic veg box delivered once a week so it depends whats in that as well. Its a good way of trying out veg that you might not pick up in the supermarket. Also, my boy likes unpacking the box and it encourages him to eat the veggies - so thats a good thing!

Mind you, he still won't eat a brussel sprout - no matter where it comes from!:))

Anonymous said...

I like Thai Green prawn curry as well - but I have to get that from the Thai/Chinese takeaway as neither of my 2 like it! They just get Chinese food..:))

Anonymous said...

Your recipe sounds good AJ - I've never tried ginger - I might give it a go!

Not much on the Scotsman blog today - I didn't think - I've added a bit more to the Mary Q of S blog but thats all. Fairly quiet on there 2day.

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Yes it's a bit dull. I tried with a wee joke on the obesity blog, but there's only slim pickings there!!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the curry tips (and the cheat tips)...I will definitely report back on the findings, l like ginger so am looking forward to trying the recipe! :)

Anna, we go in for Thai food as well...

Johnny Dep is a favorite in our house...there are 'pirate posters' in all the (kids) ;) bedrooms!

AJ, Horrible was chasing Corbett on the obesity blog, of course Lanna had to add her cerveza (beer) induced comment! ;)

Will talk with ya'll later, over coffee in the morn!! Nite!!

AJ Fife said...

Melanie, Anna and Peajay

How are you all on this fine day(Monday). I just love Mondays:-(

Anna. you'll not like my post on the Shakespeare story, but I thought I'd open with a full broadside this morning - my theory is based on research done a few years ago(which was reported in the Scotsman). It was more than likely, very "loaded" in terms of evidence, but why let the facts get in the way of .....etc!!! :-D

Thai food is the business - perhaps the finest of all!!

Melanie, Corby had a laptop malfunction last night, so was deprived of serious banter of the "low" variety!!;-)

Anna, did you watch the South Bank Show last night with Irvine Welsh?

Peajay, thanks for your support the other day - maybe yer no bad efter aw!!

AJ Fife said...

Wha hey!!!

The Shakespeare scandal may just take off!!!:-D

Anonymous said...

good morning! I'll get over to the Shakes. one...don't you hate computer malfunctions!

poor Corbie, so deprived! ;)

hope yer Moanday is going well! (not a typo!!!!) I can relate! :)

Anonymous said...

Shakespeare should be good - I've already had a pop at poster No 1 - Rennie - don't diss the English poets to me, sweetie!!;))

David from TX is on as well - but I actually agree with him today!

I don't agree with you AJ - but I know you're on a wind-up. Anyway, Burns nicked a lot of his stuff from much earlier Scottish stuff - so there - :D

Melanie - Johnny Depp is fab - we loved him in Pirates of the C.. My boy has got the lunch box, drinks bottle and wants Dr Who stuff and Captain Jack Sparrow stuff for birthday/Xmas!!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I would imagine the Shakespeare topic is right up your street. I look forward to your slaying of all petty and facetious comments like my own!!:-D

I see you stumbled on Melanie and AJ's special place!!;-))

Mondays aren't bad when you mess about on the Scotsman website Melanie!!

Anonymous said...

Yes, the posting does well to lessen the Monday blues! Of course, I'm not at work, I just have the kids school week to get on with!!

I get to go to L.A. this week for a seminar conference thingy, so that should be fun....will hopefully have access to a laptop, though, to banter on here and there!

Anonymous said...

did either of you complain about Mr. Holmes?? Check out the Cameron story postings....the same has happened to Holmes that was to us at the whirlpool!!

Anonymous said...

Melanie & AJ's special place ..... cue violins.......!! Will I be a gooseberry, if I post on there?

What is the Holmes blog - I'll have to have a look!!

Anonymous said...

it's 'tax cut, Cameron' you'll find Holmes speaking there about it

Anonymous said...

You're Never a gooseberry, Anna!!

Although I'm very partial to violins (and fiddles), I'm not sure if our music might be more like Iron Butterfly's 'In-a-gadda-da-vida"! ;)

AJ Fife said...

Melanie

Iron Butterfly! - you are a psychedelic, flower power, hippy chic! :-) Haven't heard them mentioned in 25 years. I believe I've got an album somewhere!!

AJ Fife said...

Melanie, I would never complain about anybody, apart from on a posting aimed directly at them. David TX is too good a character to lose!

AJ Fife said...

Melanie, is David TX = Holmes?

Anonymous said...

I've only ever complained about one person and that was a really nasty, racist post about Jews - which was really distasteful and the person that wrote it must have been seriously disturbed. It was removed so quickly that I don't think I was the only one that complained.

I wouldn't complain about old David from TX - hes quite entertaining in a way, and, occasionally, I agree with him!

AJ Fife said...

Mrs Gooseberry,

I noticed David TX wasn't having a go at us this time, despite my best attempts to bait him!

Anonymous said...

Mr I.B.F

David from TX is maybe not in the mood for a scrap - today!

I'm having trouble getting onto the Scotsman site at the moment - but I am with a couple of other sites as well - so I think its my server!

Mrs G.

AJ Fife said...

Anonymous said...

was wondering about IBF

Holmes=David, figured you liked the baiting and wouldn't send him off

Anonymous said...

Actually - IBF stood for Iron Butter Fly but Irriating Big F (wot u said!) is OK as well...:D

Anonymous said...

interesting blethering fellow?

insane bright fun?

incredible bantering flirt?

:)

Lanna is quite taken with Corbie's charm....but she's definitely staying away from organic food at the moment....

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I liked Melanie's take on IBF - that's because she's a well mannered Southern Belle.

Iron Butterfly sounds a bit macho/camp, like something out of Village People!:-)

I knew you would appreciate Irritating Big F.....!

AJ Fife said...

Right I'm off to my class tonight.
We're talking about psychoanalysis with respect to audiences and films they view - yaaaaaaaaaaawn!

Should be good!!

Anonymous said...

having a play with Iron Butterfly...that one song is all I'm familiar with...any other suggestions??!! Must keep up the banter!

Enjoy your class, I'm leaving for Los Angeles soon, will try to catch up later! :)

Anna, stay away from organic spinach!! (at least any from the US)

Anonymous said...

Try and stay awake - I'm just busy correcting that Iain bloke on the Shakespeare blog!!

Anonymous said...

AJ, will you be at Anna and I with your psychoanalysis of the films we watch now??!! :)

Anna, you're doing wonderfully, as usual, with your debate on the poet blog!!

He was right about Browning having a Scottish/German mother but the guy had an English father and was born in England. My grandmother was the same she had a Scottish father and an English mother and was born in England but she considered herself English. Mind you, in those days they all thought of themselves as British but I think to a lot of English the words meant virtually the same thing. It is only in the last 30 years that there has been more of a revivial of the English as oppose to the British nationality.

I don't think the Scottish ever had the same identity crisis as the English.

Because I've got so many Scottish relations and spent so much time there as a child - I tended to think of myself as a bit of a half and half! But, having lived in England for so long now as an adult - I'm probably more English now.

My husband is half Ukranian - his Dad came over here as a POW during WW2 and managed to stay on and get British Nationality. He died a few years ago, he was a lovely man. It took my husband quite a while to get into the RAF because when he joined it was the days of the Cold War and Ukraine was behind the Iron Curtain. They had to make sure that he didn't have any connections with any commie cousins!! :))

Anonymous said...

Anna, I agree with you, although my dad's fam is British ...( English, Scottish, ...with one of my great-greats who was Irish, although my dad's fam doesn't like to admit it...what is with that?? The Irish I've met have been great people!)...
...I consider myself American...albeit influenced by the Britishness of dad's fam

I suppose you're influenced by your bloodline, so to speak, and your parents, but also the culture you're raised in, and the culture you have an affinity for....the human race, what a mess!!??!!

Interesting about the Cold War/Ukraine and your hubby

Ugh, I really need to get going...the drive to LA is a killer with all the traffic...bye for now...will have to catch up later

Anonymous said...

good morning!

...am down around some of my old haunts...had a nice walk by the beach!

How was your class, AJ?! Might have time to log on my eve tomorrow...be interesting to see what you two will have been up to!! :)

talk with ya'll later!

Peajay said...

AJ

Thanks, I think. I didn't consider myself 'bad efter awl' anyway but your commendation confirms it ;D

AJ Fife said...

Anna, The global warming story is hotting up!!!boom boom

Melanie, How's LA? - I've had a walk on the beach at Santa Monica! What a small world! ;-D. btw Peajay seems a nice sort?!

Anonymous said...

Hello Melanie (if you're up yet!), Peejay and AJ...... this list is getting longer ;))

I'll have a look at the global warming blog - I've just got back - so a couple of things to do - don't want to look as if I do nothing else but blog on here all day long!!

The Russian story has gone a bit boring - why don't the Scottish Exec lobby for more tourist recognition - that lot on there just want to say - it was the English wot done it again - and sit on their hands. Independence is the cure for all ills, it seems. However, I know that is only a very tiny minority of Scottish people on there. We've got plenty of English whingers as well! ;))
Peejay - did you enjoy the craft fair - if you enjoy antique fairs - then the one at the East of England showground near Peterborough (just off the A1) is excellent. Its usually round about March/April time. They have a lot of good shows at the EofE showground - they're on the web!

Hope you're enjoying LA, Melanie, it sounds so glamourous!! My husband has been there but I've not. He's been to Las Vegas 3 times as well - but I haven't!! (bit of a sore point that one), but he has promised to take us one day. :))

Anonymous said...

The comments are pouring in thick and fast on the climate change blog!! Are we being otstriches for not taking it seriously?

Anonymous said...

Sorry - I meant ostriches! Those big birds....... and I don't mean Michelle McManus - AJ ;))

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I don't think we are sticking our heads in the sand. You and I know there is climate change taking place, but it has always been fluid - mini-ice ages in the 17th century in Britain, near tropical spells at other times in history! It just goes on and on. We are just not capable of working the big picture out!

It wasn't that long ago, I read in the Scotsman, that the main hole in the Ozone layer was repairing itself somehow!!

I believe there is a problem with polution and it needs to be addressed. However, the Global Warming issue, I think, is a card that that seems to be conveniently played by all and sundrie.

I enjoyed Cheryl the birdwatcher and David from the Hebrides - that was good fun, although she was serious!!! :-D

Anonymous said...

Yes, I agree with you - I'm all for recyling and dealing with wastage and I think we do have a problem with pollution. But, I still think some of it is the usual control freak, doomsday scenario thing. As for the 'eco-warriors' they won't be happy till we're all milking goats and knitting our own yoghurt! :D

Dave from the Western Isles is always a good read - he can get a little bit chauvanistic but some of his comments are good value. Cheryl was definitely serious - as is Fiona (plant a tree) and Catherine (NASA), however, Tina is on a total pi$$ take! ;))

Peajay said...

Hi Anna
Yes thanks craft fair good, but I was taking part not just visiting so consideration from a different aspect. I have heard that the EofE was a good place to get into and will look out for the Antiques one to drag the olds round.

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

The Scotsman server appears to be down. The police are probably investigating Corbett Hunckers as he seems like an international philandering dandy.

Enough of that nonsense, if the Scotsman suddenly stops the comments board, are there other forums that you would recommend?

I know that I maybe an embarassment, as my spelling sometimes leaves a lot to be desired! However I'll pretend not to know you on any other message boards ;-))

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I think their server has crashed - I can't get it either. I don't really know any other blogs - the Times and Telegraph have debates but they moderate as well ...... so you don't always get published and then it can take a while to read your comments.

Do you think they'll close the forums on the Scotsman - I think they have started closing the serious news ones because people were being too libellous and OTT. Maybe they're frightened of having their offices targetted by nutters!! Some of those anti Muslim boards were awful.

AJ Fife said...

I agree, the stories you can comment on have reduced, even in the short time I've been addicted(maybe that's why!).

I've noticed any current court room stories are totaly out of bounds, and also, many race and religious related items are strictly no-go.

On a different note, last nights class centered around Fritz Lang's Metropolis - made in 1927 and an incredible display of insightfulness on the directors part. Really enjoyed the class, although a young hungover student slept through most of it!! :-D
She'll regret missing out on the best years of her life!! I wish I was 21 again with my knowledge at 42 - probably even more dangerous though!!;-)

How's the legal thingy going?

Anonymous said...

Hi good eve/morn again...am having a fun time down here, found an old favorite Indian Restaurant at the Long Beach Harbor (it's been...ugh 20 yrs since I've eaten there!)...time flies!!

Santa Monica is a nice beach, and I've walked there...but I'm further south...walked on Seal Beach. My training is in East LA..glad I speak spanish!! :)

You must go to Vegas, Anna, at least once (like Venice Beach ;)...understand about the 'only he's gone' thing...mine has been to Seattle thrice and I have yet to go!! (although I can't complain, I was able to go on a business trip with him to New Orleans (pre-Katrina) that happened to be during Mardi Gras!!) But that's another story!!!!! ;) Corbie would enjoy that one!!! (I can definitely say that I was glad I had my other half as an escort/bodyguard!!!!)

Well, must say good nite, tomorrow's a long day...class then the drive home...miss the chat, but glad I have a laptop to at least leave a "Hello!!" :)

I hope the Scotsman does'nt close down the discussion boards...that would be a "bummer"

bye for now! :)

AJ Fife said...

Hello folks

Not much action today so far. I've stepped up the Corbie posts, with him claiming to be Boris Johnstone's real father - no takers yet, they're all too serious. I seem to have lost the desire to be serious these days!!

Corbie also is masquerading as a school teacher and one of his previous wives turned up (was that you Anna?).

Must do some work now! :-)

Anonymous said...

No it wasn't me pretending to be Corbie's wife!! I must have missed that one. I think the Scotsman just likes winding people out - because I can't find Boris Johnson's comment in the Times today... possibly I missed it. But they're obviously not making a big deal out of it. Boris is always making gaffes but he is a clever man underneath all the buffoonery! ;))

Las Vegas was supposedly a 'working trip' for my husband, Melanie ........ but he still had a great time! He went down to the south of Italy a couple of years back and we got a trip there - which was really nice!

New Orleans - I've always wanted to visit there - but its one of those places where you have to really watch out for yourself. Mind you, I suppose its changed a lot now since Katrina.

Saying that about N.O tho' - Italy can be a bit dodgy, especially Rome and Florence - theres a lot of pickpockets and petty thieves!

The 'legal thingy' is going OK, AJ, ..... I'll have to get cracking and do a bit more work on it and stop blogging so much.

Anonymous said...

AJ - are you Egon the Blade on the obesity blog?
I've been invited to the Mince Health Farm anyway!! :D

AJ Fife said...

Not me Anna, but whoever they are, they got into the fun! Probably the same person that pretends to be Corby's wife!!!

Corby has been ignored completely on the Boris Blog, despite the insight that could have been forthcoming.

btw we're having a superb hail storm at the moment, but ma wee office is nice and cosy!

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised that David from TX hasn't popped up on the Boris blog - hes always good for a chuckle!!

The sky has just got really dark down here - its probably your hail stones on their way south!! :))

Anonymous said...

Are you sure thats not you AJ - on the Health - obesity blog - posing as Egon. He's got a very similar sense of humour ........ ah, you've got have a chuckle!!

Anonymous said...

That, last should read Ah you've got *to* have a chuckle.

Anonymous said...

I see Scotsman.com has been taken off line for essential maintenance - just in the middle of a good argument as well!! :D

Anonymous said...

Well hello!!!

Hail storm so early?!, (Global Warming???!!) October was rather nice when we were in Scotland (except a rainstorm did come in later on to prevent us from going to Skye...it's on the list for the return trip, someday!)
...which brings me to ask...when were you in Santa Monica, AJ? It definitely is a small world...it's fun to think you and I might have been walking there the same day!.... :)

Anna, my aunt lives outside of N.O. and used to take my cousins to Mardi Gras every year as there is a part of it that is very family oriented. Our hotel, however, was very close to Bourbon St. in the French Q. I could safely walk alone in the morning to the shops near the hotel...but there was No Way I was going anywhere in the evening/night without my hubby as escort. There was a lot of police presence, but some of the goings on was unbelievable and some of it is really unrepeatable!

So which obesity blog were you on? couldn't find it....it's always fun to read some of the banter, even if late!

..." I wish I was 21 again with my knowledge at 42 - probably even more dangerous though!!;-) "....scary, AJ!!, I just made that same comment yesterday to my other half while we were standing out on the pier watching the waves come in ...
(it felt SO great to be down by the sea, again!) ...but I don't miss the traffic...it took me 30 minutes in the morning to go about 9 miles/6-7? kms

okay, I apologise for being so "verbal"...hopefully haven't bored you too much!!! :) will check back my morn, :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Melanie, AJ & Peajay (if you're looking!)

Open the Health headline - there is a picture of a 'big fat lass' from the rear and an ariticle about obesity. I, confess I haven't actually read the article but some of the comments are good.

Its getting quite cold here now, we've put the heating on - whats happened to global warming? I'll have to prune my roses back next week!

Still 21 with the experience and maturity of 40ish... yep, I'm all for that, bring it on!!

AJ Fife said...

Hi Folks,

I've got an unplanned day off, thanks to the "bairn". She was sick last night, so she needs a wee bit of TLC from her Dad!

Anna, you seen to have hit a chord on the obesity site - it certainly isn't me btw. I've added another comment to try and help it along. Also I've introduced anew character on the basking shark blog and promptly got a ticking off for being thick!!! No comments please :-)

Melanie, I was strolling in Santa Monica in Jan 2003. Interestingly, I was trying to buy a book on Brian Wilson/Beach Boys in a massive book store in the main pedestrian precinct - they didn't stock anything worthwhile. Brian Wilson is an amazing guy with an amazing story and I thought there would be loads of material, given he is an LA boy! Not so :-(

Hope you are all well. My time will be limited today, whereas my work allows me to keep track almost all day!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, you'll have to really work for a living today, AJ, looking after your littleun :-)) Hope she's on the mend and feeling better.

I, occasionally, get a "my tummy hurts" off my son, but its usually when I'm trying to drag him away from the telly and off to school! Its always a worry, tho', when they get poorly!

I'm having trouble getting onto the Scotsman site again - has it crashed? It was OK this morning but.... maybe they're having technical problems.

Egon the blade is funny as anything - I love that Gimme me mince, Joanna, song that he made up!! Excellent. Maybe, its David from TX, who has suddenly found his sense of humour ........ no I doubt it!! ;)

Anonymous said...

Which one is the basking shark blog?

AJ Fife said...

The shark story is under science and I 've been having difficulty getting into the Scotsman too :-(

The wee one's woken up after her late morning nap - almost feeding time!!:-D

Anonymous said...

AJ - I've managed to get back onto the Scotsman - found the shark story - did a search! I take it that Salty is you? That Ian geezer has had a real sense of humour failure ...... I wonder if he's related to oor Davie in TX? I've sent Salty's auld ma intae the fray to wind things up a bit more!! Couldn't resist it :D What's for lunch? Spaghetti hoops and sausages followed by those little pots of yoghurt? Or are you going to whip up a quick 'cordon bleu' recipe from your repetoire?

AJ Fife said...

Jist a wee drap of scrambled egg and toast - which she fed to the dugs!! She did scoff the Yoggie and biscuits tho'!

But, c'mon Anna, you're starting to master the wind ups!!

Jan 2003, a possibility, AJ!! :)

What about Brian Wilson do you like as far as his life story, etc??

Anna, saw that you had some fun on the Breastfeed blog...oh that is so "up my street" but the witty was not awake yet, and have to be out the door :(

bye for now!

Anonymous said...

There's a few rampant racists been let loose on the asylum seekers blog. I'm not going to comment on that one - I'm not feeling very serious today and I think the BNP is stalking that board - can't stand them at any price!!

Yes, the Hebridean takes himself a bit seriously, sometimes, and is an expert on everything! Mind you, it is a bit boring in the Outer Islands and the weather is crap, so hes got to have some pleasures in life..... :-))

Anonymous said...

What does Jan 2003 mean? Or is it a secret code and am I being a nosy gooseberry?

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

You're being a wee bit daft, Jan 2003 was the time I was in LA. Melanie is romaticising about the possibility of us having bumped into one another!!;)) At that point, I was married for about two weeks!!

Melanie, Brian Wilson is interesting because of his fight with mental illness, also the dynamique between himself and Mike Love and of course his relationship with Dr Eugene Landy. Not forgetting his tragic brothers and his dictatorial father, plus his drug addictions (which were possibly the start of his mental problems).

Hope you are well Melanie and have recovered from your trip.

Were you wearing a T shirt, blue jeans and trainers back in Jan 2003? If yes, maybe I do remember you.....:-D

Anonymous said...

Ah well, AJ - you know what these guys on their honeymoon can be like - among those 'California Beach Babes'!!;))

Did you have roller skates on? You could have bypassed each other along the thingymajig that they seem to skate along! Or is that Miami?

AJ Fife said...

Yes Anna, I was wearing a cut off t shirt with baggy shorts, listening to a walkman playing the Beastie Boys!

I remember seeing this girl with a flaired skirt and a woollen college cardigan playing with her pig tails........, I think her name was Melanie. For some reason we started singing and dancing, everyone around joined in too....

Anonymous said...

Yes, AJ - your California beach fantasy sounds lovely .........keep taking the tablets...:D

I've just been having a look at the old Whirlpool Grail site at the Scotsman - can you believe its still open - even tho' they kicked us off it ages ago. There's some loonie blogged something today - whoever, it is sounds seriously nuts!! Wonder what they made of all our posts....... hysterical!!

Do you know we started blogging on there on the 24th August - doesn't time fly!!

They've closed the asylum seekers board already - can't say I blame them - it was getting very racist.

Anonymous said...

But then, we've been on here nearly a month now - outrageous!!

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

I can't remember life without message boards. I think I maybe sectioned under the mental health act:-D

Ayway, I was at the cinema last night - Children of Men - very thought provoking and disturbing. Check it out with the Group Captain.

Funny that, Melanie only has a Sgt Mjr!!

AJ Fife said...

wow, Florjan is pretty special!!

Are we cursed?

Hi Anna
I've been looking but been to busy to add my four penneth. Do you think that the rear view in obesity is the front view in 'Appetite grows for obesity pills'. Sturdy is the description which springs to mind ;-}

Anonymous said...

Aye, Peajay, a sturdy girl she is for sure!!! the Sgt Mjr would say "corn-fed" ;)

"Children of Men" looks really interesting...didn't know about it... looks like a good movie to see....good actors, interesting plot...will have to look for it here....Of course, these days for me, it's more like...."Open Season" ...treating the kiddies to a matinee tomorrow, :)

AJ, shhhh!!! I really did enjoy the dancing and singing, but must you go broadcasting it??!!! ;)

I was familiar with Brian Wilson having a difficult childhood etc, saw a documentary on him/them, ...I do think there is a link with the drug use/mental illness...

Anna, soon we'll be exchanging holiday greetings!!! :)

AJ, are you suggesting I married "down"?! ;)

Well, it's off to beddy by, and hopefully a more productive post day tomorrow as I should be around!! Finally!!

Florjan gets the special prize for being "mentally ?healthy??!"!

I'm recovered, AJ, thanks! :) but have 2 more days of it next week...more time by the sea!!! hummmm....was this planned??!!! :)

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Do you think the Holy Grail site is still open because it keeps on getting hits?

It does seem a very long time and only one person posted after we were evicted (like the Highland Clearances?). I like to think we have a cult following, who hang on our every word -

Anna the feisty one, takes no prisoners and can argue till the coo come hame!

Melanie - the earth mother, kindly, respectful and the world's leading expert on all things spiritual!

AJ - The eejit, for every hundred posts, he gets one that hits the mark, spends rest of the time being insulted or ignored!

Peajay - still a mystery, only Melanie knows the real Peajay.

That could be the view of our hundreds of fans out there!!!

What does dillusional mean? ;-D

Hi all,

I think you're probably right about the 'models' for those 2 blogs Peajay, they're definitely not Zero ones anyway.

Any good blogs, today, AJ? I've not had the chance to look yet! I'm starting to wonder if there is a 'time out' facility on the Scotsman blogs, i.e. make too many hits and they pick up on you and start moderating you. Sort of 5 strikes and you're out......

Florjan is completely barking - I don't even understand that post.

Melanie, I've read the book 'Children of Men' its by PD James - quite a good book - as you say, quite thought provoking - and frightenly plausible!! Bit like Brave New World....:-)

frightenly change to frightingly

Big Egon's going to make me a lard breakfast in bed ....... on Saturday am ..... on the obesity blog - looks like I've scored there, then.... :-D

Anonymous said...

AJ, you are way too hard on yourself...we know the eejit persona is a smokescreen for the intelligent and perceiving person that you really are!!....so, with that said... I annoint you, the Guru of the Grail....your holiness!!! ;)

but beware...maybe the grail site is a trap they've set for the enlightened ones... were they to return and post??!!

Anna/AJ have you seen the film, The Indian, with Anthony Hopkins...I've heard it's good...this film and Children, on the list to see soon...

Anonymous said...

Breakfast in Bed??!! Anna, you have some Scarlett in you!!!!

okay questions for the my enlightened friends (you too Peajay)

...what is your favorite color?? (said with a Monty Python, Holy Grail accent!)

...what is your birth month?
(I must keep up my spiritualness and do the astrology forecast ;)

...and most important, do you put jam or honey on your toast?? :)

AJ Fife said...

hi Melanie,

Don't know about the Guru title, but how about the Keeper - I could charge people to visit my house and view a bit of old crockery.

Speaking of old, Anna, you have still got a wee bit of spark left - cracking on wi Big Egon! You naughty little minx!! ;-)

I'm currently trying to provoke things on various sites - Camilla for starters, rabbit experiment story and 14th Cent castle blog. How about you guys?

AJ Fife said...

Blue, November and jam

What's the name of your first pet? Now add your mother's maiden name!

Mine - Storm Shepherd - kinda like a 70's Hollywood porn star! :D

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, there's life in this old girl yet!!! I saw you on the Camilla blog, AJ....... - wonder who's playing Camilla, could be Egon?

I'm trying to think of something witty to add to the rabbit blog and failing miserably ;)

Melanie, fave colour is blue, month August and strawberry jam!
First pet - Lindy, mother's maiden name - Worrell..... why?

My questions favourite artist, favourite animal, favourite book.

Turner, leopard, Grapes of Wrath.

Anonymous said...

November, eh? Scorpio or Saggitarius :)

First pet was a kitten named Gato (spanish for cat...pretty inventive for a 3yr old?!)...so I guess it would be Gato Gillespie!

It would be neat to see the castle restored, accurately, but only by public funds...This guy would no doubt eventually restrict/block public access, esp if he doesn't need the tourist cash flow

70's porn star?!, AJ you're giving yourself away!

AJ Fife said...

Gato Gillespie

Storm Shepherd

Lindy Worrell

Handy new alias', plus they sound interesting and mysterious!:D

Normally it throws up a spectacular name, but I'm afraid Anna, your one is kinda......ordinary! What was your second pets name?

AJ Fife said...

Anna,

Kandinsky, Hedgehog and..........it's a hard one , I'll get back to you!

Anonymous said...

Bellatrix - Trixie for short - so I'll be Bellatrix McGeorge if you like - that was one of my grandmother's maiden names and it makes me sound like a bit of a witch ..... which is probably appropriate!! :))

Anonymous said...

Hi Anna, so that would make you a Leo?? another blue...must be the influence of the nearby sea?!

great idea for new alias', yes!!!

Bellatrix McGeorge, I like it!

AJ, Kandinsky, Hedgehog??...did I miss something?

Where are you guys posting today? Saw you on the Camilla blog

AJ Fife said...

Now, Bellatrix McGeorge is spectacular. Bob Geldof couldn't come up with anything that good!!:D

I had a Great Aunt who had a poodle called Swankie - Swankie Shepherd has a certain ring to it, but I'll stick to Storm!!

Melanie, Anna asked us what our fav artist, animal and book was!

Anonymous said...

Yes, blue is my favourite colour in it's various different hues - turquoise thro' to navy. Because the fenland is so flat we get spectacular big skies here and we also get fabulous sunsets. Our house faces east to west, and we have no houses in front of us, so we often have a fantastic show out of the window!! It does mean that you have to buy blinds for the windows tho' as the old fiery ball in the sky can get a bit bright sometimes.

I ordered 'Trainspotting' out of the library today, AJ, so I'll let you know how I get on with it.

You didn't tell us what your birth sign etc was, Melanie. Yes, I'm a Leo ..... couldn't you tell - feisty cat!! Actually, I don't even like domestic cats - I've got a bit of an aversion to them but I do love the look of leopards!!

I've only blogged on Camilla so far ...... I might give Bellatrix McGeorge a whirl on one of the blogs!!

Anonymous said...

okay I'm a goof, I guess the hedgehog threw me off...I can understand Anna's feline choice, but AJ, a hedgehog?...although,they are rather cute, and I've read they're useful in the garden!!

favourite artist...Glazier (US)and Preston (UK) ...don't recognise your choices??!

favourite animal - the noble horse

favourite book -that is a hard one, I have fond childhood memories of CS Lewis', Chronicles of Narnia! I still like Tolkien's Hobbit, LOR series...wish I could give you something more thought provoking...

green, May (Gemini), jam (black currant mixed with strawberry)

Anonymous said...

Melanie, I love the Chronicles of Narnia too and I've enjoyed reading them myself again (as an adult) and also to my son. Did you see the Lion, W & W film - I bet you did - we all really enjoyed it and got the DVD as soon as it came out. My mother in law came to stay during the hols and she watched it with me and my boy and she loved it as well. It was about the 4th time that we'd seen it!!

William Mallord Turner was an 18th century English landscape artist - he painted the most amazing skies - absolutely wonderful. I've got 2 small prints of his painting 'The Fighting Temeraire' and one of 'Hannibal crossing the Alps' and the figures and ships in them are secondary to the sky .... brilliant to be able to paint like that!

Anonymous said...

AJ - do you eat Hedgehogs in Fife? Wrap them in clay like the Romanys do and roast them on the fire?

Agree with the horse, Melanie, my favourite painting of a horse is Whistlejacket by John Stubbs - if you go to the UK national gallery website you can see the painting using their search engine.

Anonymous said...

Anna, do you dare answer Egon!!!

AJ, I noticed Camilla hasn't answered you, maybe you scared her off??!!

ya'll must be about your evening business?

AJ, sorry I haven't guessed Sag vs Scorp....I'm just not as familiar with the personality traits of those as I am with Leo....so, do tell...no wrong answer here! :)

Anonymous said...

okay will check out the site..

Anna, people eat hedgehogs?? but they're so cute! ....I guess people do eat cuddly things like rabbits and Elk?! ;) Makes one want to be veggie only sometimes!! :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Melanie,

I don't eat hedgehog .... and I don't think anyone does now - I was just having a joke with AJ. But, Romany gypsys used to eat them - they wrapped them in clay and baked them on the fire and the spines came off when it was cooked.

I do eat rabbit tho' and I make a fairly good game pie!! Even my boy likes rabbit - its a very lean meat, like chicken, so is actually quite heatlthy, but not to everyone's taste!

www.nationalgallery.org is the website for the London gallery - there are a few of Turner's paintings on there as well.:))

Have you got any good recipes for sweet potato? I got a couple of them in my organic veg box this week and I'm not sure what is best to do with them! I suppose you can just treat them like ordinary potato, but just wondered if you had any interesting recipe ideas.

Strangely, enough if AJ is a Saggitarius then he and I are compatible - he must be a Scorpio. My husband is a Sag and my son is a Scorpio.

What Chinese sign are you - I am a Rat........ figures I know!! ;))

Anonymous said...

I've just had a look at the Muslim women blog - the BNP are on there, as are a few militant 'Christians'. Give it a couple more hours and Bible Belt America will find it ...... - no offence, to you, Melanie, of course but you know what I mean. I bet the Scotsman close it down soon!! ;)

Anonymous said...

Hi Anna, yes fire signs can go together, but they can also make for some "heated" discussions...my sis-in-law is Leo, bro is Aries...don't want to be around them when they git into tiffs!! :)

Scorpio is water, right?

Anyway, I still think it's overall personality, experiences etc that makes compatibility...

Have to step out for about an hour n half....will check out that other blog when I get back... :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Anna, wow, I expected you and AJ to be chatting away when I got back...forgot it's Friday nite...

I am the year of the dragon, I think

I have a recipe for sweet potato pie...I like it better than pumpkin pie....for baked sweet potatoes, i just add butter and a little brown sugar. SwPs are also good sliced, dipped in tempura batter and fried.

no offence taken, the bible bangers dig their own hole...I think they do more harm than good...
...Earth Mother quote of the day..."people don't care what you know, until they know that you care" Maybe those bible bangers should learn this!!!!

Have a great eve...hope to chat later....time for the matinee at the Cinema with the kiddies...

Anonymous said...

Hope you enjoy your film, Melanie, do you bake the sweet potatoes in their skins, btw or roll them in the butter and brown sugar first? I like the fried in tempura recipe - I might try that one :)

AJ - has probably gone shopping to get his frozen peas and ice cream tonight ..... Sainsburys is probably busy!! ;)

Speak later.. or tomorrow some time :)

Had sweet potato this evening for dinner in the form of Roasted Pesto Chicken with Polenta and Vegaetables. The SwP was peeled, chopped and oven roasted along with the other veggies. Very nice.

Anonymous said...

dinner sounded fab Peajay!

Anna, when I bake them, it's in the skins then peel afterwards, then add the extras

the movie was "kiddie cute", I had more fun seeing mine laugh more so than at the film itself! :) ...I'm sure you understand!!!

Chronicles of Narnia film was good...we're hoping they make the Voyage/Dawn Treader into a film as well...

Well, catch up will ya'll later

G'nite Bellatrix, Morgan and Storm!!! ;)

Anonymous said...

Well, I must admit we have a variety of 'likes' in art...that was a good question! I've taken the kids down to the Getty Museum to 'explore' art, they loved it!

Anna, I like Turner's work, and Whistlejacket by John Stubbs is beautiful!!

AJ, I like the impressionists but K seems more abstract...I do love the vibrancy of his colors! Do you have any of his prints?

Nancy Glazier... for her Western Americana and Rex Preston ...seascape/Bamburgh Castle and some of his Scottish landscapes. Have some impressionist prints from a friend of ours, Steve Nootenboom.

right, it's nae guid tae be keepin this from ye a'. I'm affy sorry fer no sayin this earlier... I dinna mean tae keep it quiet...I thought you would be back AJ, then I would fess up to the both of you...I was Camilla from Aberdeenshire! :)

you two are astute and I figured you would ken the writing style and question me?! I just couldn't keep it going after AJ's last comment!!! :)) (and I had the wee bairns aboot!)

there, my conscious is clear... ;)

Anonymous said...

Hi Peajay, Melanie - thanks for the recipes - I'll try them out... its great getting this veg box delivered because you never know whats going to be in it - its like Christmas!!

The original of Whistlejacket in the Nat Gallery is enormous - it is so impressive - when we went to the Gallery - we walked into the room where it hangs and my boy just stood there and said "WOW, look at that". One of the curators was so impressed with his enthusiasm that he had a personal chat about the painting - very good! I recommend the Nat Gallery for a visit - its on Trafalgar Square and its free entry!!! :)

I never suspected you of being Camilla...... sneaky, Melanie, very sneaky but trust AJ to lower the tone of the piece and scare you off!! He probably thought he was dealing with Doreen or Horrible Cankers........or even me!! :D Bad boy AJ - consider yourself admonished!!

Anonymous said...

sorry should have been conscience...

I agree with you Anna, AJ has a very broad repertoire of conversational topics!! ;)

I suppose I could have come up with something witty (and not too low) to retort back, but at the time, the kiddies had come 'round for schoolwork questions and it was difficult to stay in character...plus I didn't want them to see AJ's last topic and ask too many questions!!!!! (my littlest one is the most inquisitive...I can just see it..."mommy what does...B*ban mean??!!!") aaagh!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I know what you mean, Melanie, mine has eyes like a hawk as well and he's just at the age of asking all the questions!! ;)

Problem is, you start answering a few and they get trickier and trickier! He's mad about wildlife programmes and some of them can get a bit graphic ..... Still, I guess they're educational as well! :D

I expect AJ is celebrating because Scotland beat France at the football! England were a bit pathetic and only managed a draw with Macedonia...... over paid prima donnas!!

Anonymous said...

it's always good to beat France! :)

No doubt AJ will be getting on with many pints in celebration!!

Mine have grown up around farm animals...stallions, billy goats even male mallards!!! You can imagine the questions!! I had to remind them when they were younger that we don't ask certain questions loudly in public places!!

AJ Fife said...

Melanie,

I'm blushing, didn't realise you were Camilla!!! The last comment was thrown in for laughs, but I didn't relise you let your kids read the posts! I normally reserve the raunchy stuff for Anna, so I apologise for any embarassment I may have caused.

I've been out of commision because I picked up the wee one's bug - a very unpleasant 24 hrs or so. It does make you realise why they can be cranky, however she dealt with it better than me!!

Watched the Scotland game, but I couldn't partake in any celebrations :((

Going to be off to Berlin on Tuesday, so we're getting prepared for that. Anna, will I leave the Swastika armband at home or take it with me? - Prince Harry would know the protacol!!:D

AJ Fife said...

Apologies for the spelling in the last post - should always read before sending!!

As for favourite Artists, my taste has changed considerably in the last few years to the more abstract and surreal - Kandinsky, Picasso and Warhol do spring to mind.

The reason for this was my wife's grandfather, who was a keen amateur artist and concentrated on abstract style, although he could turn his hand to almost any style. We have almost 400 paintings and sketches spread over the family - mostly in attics unfortunately.

We had an exhibition of his work in a local council building and it was well recieved. This was a memorial roughly a year after his death. His wife was still alive at that point and it felt like a really good thing to do. His art was very well recieved, but we've done nothing since.

Anonymous said...

Hi AJ ..... sorry you weren't well - its amazing how many bugs you pick up off the little darlings isn't it? When mine first started school I seemed to get everything that he got! We both had to build up our immunities....

I quite like Picasso as well - Guernica is a fab painting. I had to check out Kandinsky on the webm after your mention of him, and I liked the look of some of those as well :))

I haven't got an artistic bone in my body, really, but I do like looking at other people's work!

I think it might be an idea not to wear the Swastika armband and not goosestepping or shouting Seig Heil either. You might end up surrounded by Poleizi with guns aimed at you! ;) I've only been to Berlin once, and didn't really see much of it from the ground - it was in the early 80s and we flew 'up the corridor' and into RAF Gatow so I had a good view of the wall etc, from the air.
How long are you going for?

AJ Fife said...

Hi Anna, yes I can't wait for the mumps, although she has had the MMR injection. I wouldn't mind too much, but I'd rather be ill during the week, not the sodding weekend!!

Nevermind, the German authorities are hard on any public show of Nazi-ism. You don't pass go, it's straight into Spandau. You could check Rudolf Hess's scratch marks I suppose!!

I think any trip to Berlin would be greatly enhanced if you were there before 1990. Unfortunately, this will be my first time, so I can't make the comparison. Even with your brief visit Anna, I bet you'd remember more than you realise.

I'm going for three days, it's really just a city break type trip, but I hope to cram in as many tours as my other half will allow. To be fair, she likes the history aspect, but sometimes gets bored. I took her to see Downfall - Hitler's last days as witnessed by his PA - and she was blown away.

How many overseas tours did you do Anna? If you were still in, you could have toured all the hotspots in the Middle East!!:(

Anonymous said...

Hi, I lived in Germany as a teenager (the formative years!) when my Dad was in the RAF in the 70s. Then, I went to Wildenrath in the early 80s - oh those were the days alright - we were forever togged up in NBC suits and respirators in case the Russian hordes decided to nuke us!! The trip to Gatow was in an old Pembroke aircraft they used to shuttle up and down a few times and you could sometimes get a day out! I do remember what a beautiful day it was tho' and we had a fantastic view all the way. In between times there were a lot of parties, beercalls and other 'recreational' type outings - ah a mis-spent youth ;) I've been to the Falklands and Cyprus as well - although I was in the Middle East and East Africa as a child. My husband has been all over the place - middle and near East a few times, South Africa, USA, various places in Europe during the Balkans conflict, even as far a field as Leuchars and Lossie a couple of times :D Some places he liked and some he did not but I suppose they're all educational!
